Day 41-42, Thursday-Friday, 3-4th October

Ingolstadt, Frankfurt

rain 10 °C

So to start the day we headed to the Audi museum, except it was a holiday, so we had to wait half an hour before it opened. Not like us to be early ????

The museum was fabulous - went through the history of Audi and had some wonderful cars on display. After that we had a quick drive into Ingolstadt, but there was a lot of diversions in place due to special Octoberfest events so we decided to head off to Frankfurt and our last night in Germany.

Reasonable trip through to Frankfurt, and we found our hotel - not one we’ll be returning to. But it was warm and quiet at least. Caught the bus into town for a wander around and a meal. Lots of folk around enjoying the festivities. Shame it was wet.

Bused back to the hotel and an early night.
Woke to more rain - we seem to be leaving at the right time ???? Bused into town again and wandered around in the rain - shame really as the river side looked really nice. Then it was time to head back to the hotel, pick up the rental car for the final leg to the airport. Now for the long ride home to NZ.

Day 38-39, Monday- Tuesday, 30th September -1st October

Lahr, Titisee-Neustadt, Freiburg, Augsburg

overcast 15 °C

Had a lovely day on Monday with Nils. First driving up to Lake Titisee, then walking around the lake. Saw the biggest cuckoo clock shop (apparently ????). The clocks are amazing bits of kit.

Then back into Freiburg for a wander around the old town. Gorgeous buildings, and amazing looking gothic church.
Then back to Lahr for a final meal with Nils and family.

Drove via the Black Forest to Augsburg the next morning. It was a fabulous drive along little roads, sometimes feeling we were in the farmers yards!
Augsburg is an hour away from Munich and the BMW plant that we were booked to tour on Wednesday. Had a great walk around the old town, a disappointing schnitzel and a tram ride back to our hotel.

Day 40, Wednesday, 2nd October

BMW Museum and Plant tour, Munich

semi-overcast 14 °C

Rainy day today, so good to be going to the BMW museum and the factory tour. Enjoyed the museum, but the tour was disappointing as several of the key plant lines and the paint room lines weren’t operating. Still we had a good day, bought a couple of t-shirts as mementos and then headed off for Ingolstadt.

As it was Octoberfest accomodation in Munich was at a premium so we went about an hour north on the route to Frankfurt. Only problem was it was raining, all the roads were clogged, and it took 3hrs instead of one!
Really wondered what the hotel was that we were going to when we arrived....it was dark by then and we seemed to be in an industrial area - which it was! The Audi factory, training and museum area!

The hotel was great, even had a complimentary light meal available on our arrival, ravioli and salad, so we were very happy.

Day 36-37, Saturday-Sunday, 28-29th September

Lahr/Schwarzwald

semi-overcast 18 °C

After a 4.5hr drive from Cannobio (lots of tunnels and lots of roadworks) We finally arrived in Lahr to visit with Nils, Antje and Lasse.
It’s so lovely to visit our friends in their own home towns and share their special places.
Nils and family moved to Lahr a couple of years ago. Antje is originally from Lahr, and Nils had spent some time here when his parents moved to Lahr for his fathers work. Quite different from Hamburg, but they are loving it.
Lots of yachting tales being told, and some old photo surprises!
Being on the edge of the Black Forest our first outing was a trip to some ruins! The Hohengeroldseck castle and tower. Followed by dinner at a small restaurant at the edge of the forest, very traditional and a great afternoon.

The next morning Nils drove us into France, over the Rhine, to Chateau du Haut-Koenigsbourg. A castle that has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over the past 800 years! Very interesting to wander around - with a couple of hundred other tourists! Then back to Germany for a walk in the forest and afternoon tea - what else but Black Forest Gateau! Another traditional Gausthaus - Höhengasthaus zum Krauz. Everyone seemed to be out, walking, cycling, horse trekking, or just motorcycling or driving. Rain is threatened for tomorrow but it was for today as well and didn’t arrive so fingers crossed....

Day 34-35, Thursday-Friday, 26th-27th September

Santa Colomba, Colle Di Val d’Elsa, Cannobio

sunny

Wonderful night with our hosts parents (actually his father) cooking a wonderful meal. Antipasti of cold meats, liver bruschetta, olives and tomatoes, then homemade pasta with meat ragu, followed by various meats and verges....rabbit, lamb, zucchini flowers, mushrooms.....so beautiful. We provided wine and a roasted nectarine crumble for dessert which was marvelled over! Very late night!!!

Slow start to the day, sorting and packing. Then we headed out to Colle di Val d’Elsa (which we’d spied on our way back yesterday) for lunch. Found a wonderful restaurant and had a long last lunch at L’angolo Di Sapia. Definitely on the again list.

After a wander around a very untouristy town we headed back via a local church.
The church is one we’d seen the bell tower from our villa, San Giovanni Battista a Permian. It was a lonely church in a clearing, but when we were leaving, a van pulled in with a local guide showing two kiwi women around! She was surprised to find someone else there! Points to us!!

A very sad goodbye to our hosts, Lucca and Madeleina, and to Marty and Michele on Friday morning as we headed back up to Germany. Marty and Michele were heading to Croatia for a 7 day cruise, while we headed up to the Black Forest to visit sailing friends.

The overnight stop was on Lake Maggiore, at Cannobio. Definitely worthy of another visit with more time. Weather is still warm, but cloudy with the odd shower of rain.
